The DOOM Academy Awards 2004

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the DOOM Academy Awards 2004, also known as The Golden Cyber! Presented by COMPET-N, this is the first ever award ceremony for DOOM speedrunners.

The voting consists of two phases. First, the audience (that's you!) chooses which entries (demos or players) were the best in the year 2004. The ones with the most votes will be the nominees and enter the second phase.
In the second phase, the best of the best are chosen, as only one entry from the nominees (the one with the most votes) can win The Golden Cyber award!

Here's a schedule on the voting:
July 3rd - July 15th: first (nomination) phase.
July 17th: announcement of nominees.
July 17th - July 29th: second (vote) phase.
July 31st: awards ceremony.

The nomination phase

The nominees can be chosen from the demos recorded for COMPET-N from January 1st, 2004 to December 31st, 2004. Only demos awarded with points can be chosen (no misc. demos). I tried to make nomination as easy as possible. The category titles speak for themselves mostly, but I'll explain some of them:

  • Best new trick: nominees can be chosen from NEW tricks created last year.
  • Best technical merit: choose ANY demo which impressed you the most from the technical point of view (difficulty, moves, tricks, etc.)
  • Best artistic impression: choose ANY demo which impressed you the most from the artistic point of view (style, smoothness, perfection, etc.)
  • Best player: nominees can be chosen from players who submitted at least ONE demo last year.
  • Best new player: nominees can be chosen from players who submitted their FIRST demo last year.
  • Most improved player: nominees can be chosen from players who are NOT new players but submitted at least ONE demo last year.
  • Best cooperative player: same as player of the year, just for cooperative.
  • Lifetime achievement: choose any person who, in your opinion, has done the most for the speedrunning scene (demos or other work).

    The voting phase

After the nominees are announced, you will be able to choose ONLY ONE nominee in each category, which, in your opinion deserves The Golden Cyber. The winners will be announced on the website, however, there is a plan to make a live awards ceremony over IRC.

    Let the nomination begin

You can cast your vote by filling the text boxes with your choices. Please restrict to writing the filenames ONLY in the boxes (without extension, and separated by spaces or commas). This makes administration hell of a lot easier. To make your choice easier, lists are provided for each category which contain all possible entries for the category. In the lists, demos which are still records at current time (July 3rd) are marked with a star. Note that IWAD and PWAD demos are together in each category, so don't forget about them if you wish any PWAD demos into the nominee basket.

The nomination lasts till July 15th, 23:59 CET.

    Some advice on the voting

    Here's a few tips:

  • VOTE!!! The community is small, and to make this event happen, we desperately need every single vote. So, if you are reading this, don't forget that it's your vote which decides everything! Please spare some time to vote.
  • Don't forget that you have one chance of voting, so don't rush your vote. But don't forget it completely either :)
  • You can always fill in less entries than the number specified, just don't go over the limit.
  • I know it's hard to choose even 10 entries in the categories, because there are so many good runs. Here's how I would do it: 1) scan the list for anything which catches your eye at a first glance, and write those down to your favorite place (notebook, text file, piece of paper, whichever you prefer). 2) do a count on your list and see how much you're over the limit. 3) do a second scan, now in your own list and choose the better ones. 4) repeat from 2) as many times as needed :)
  • The boxes are more than enough to hold your votes, just keep writing :)

IPs are logged and only one vote per person, please.

    Now cast your vote! :)
