The Cybers found their new homes :: (24th March, 2002)
For those who missed out on the awards ceremony, all the details are here.

Demo update to follow next weekend.

Movies galore :: (17th March, 2002)
The voting for the DOOM Academy Awards is over, head over and see where and when the award ceremony will be held.

This update contains some extremely high quality stuff. You have been warned... :)

First, let's see what we have for Ultimate DOOM:

  • Adam Williamson brought his own E1M6 record to under 1 minute by sending in a 0:59 run.
  • Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore basically cut the E4M6 NM record time in half by running the perilous speedrun-route first employed in Doom Done Quick. His time is 1:57 (with 100% secrets, too).
  • Anders Johnsen improved three records on E4M2: Max in 1:23, Tyson in 12:13 and UV -fast in 1:44.
  • I improved the E4M7 speedrun record to 0:10.
  • Oyvind Stenhaug improved the E1M8 Tyson record to 2:18, which I improved to 2:05. Oyvind recorded 2:04 soon, which I managed to improve to 1:50.

    DOOM2:

  • You might remember that in October 2000 and later in May 2001 we had 3 30nm/30ns demos in a single update. Now the record is beaten as we have 5!!! 30nm demos in the same update. Ian Sabourin is a new D2S, he recorded the whole game on NightMare skill in 58:39. Vincent Catalaa improved his own run first to 42:09, then to 39:51 and later to 37:53. That's more than 7 minutes of improvement for Vincent! Henning Skogsto, the long-time record holder of the category also felt obliged to improve his best, and he did it in true style, cutting nearly 2 minutes off his best and got 34:13. All demos are must see, obviously.
  • Marijo "Sedlo" Sedlic improved the speedrun record of MAP03 by 4 seconds and got 0:19 in a breathtaking demo.
  • Laszlo Vecsei improved his own MAP15 speedrun record by yet another second and got 1:22.
  • Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore improved the NM record of MAP12 to 1:10.
  • Radek Pecka did a nice pack on MAP11: Max in 2:32, UV -fast in 2:36 and UV -respawn in 2:15. Staying at -respawn, he did MAP27 in 2:52 and MAP28 in 2:18.
  • Henning Skogsto took back his MAP31 -fast record with a 2:20 recording.

    Plutonia:

  • Vincent Catalaa improved the MAP23 speedrun record to 1:33.

    Requiem:

  • The MAP25 saga continues: Jason Dyer's 0:42 was beaten by Erik Alm's 0:37. Erik also recorded a Max of 2:42.
  • On other maps, Erik Alm did a MAP31 speed in 1:36, while Jason Dyer did a MAP19 speed in 2:38.

    Memento Mori:

  • Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore completed his set of movies for this megawad, he did maps 21-30 in 31:11 and the whole WAD in 83:56.
  • He also did a few Max demos: MAP14 in 4:22, MAP23 in 5:56 and MAP24 in 2:31.
  • Chris "Ryback" Ratcliff did a few Max demos as well: MAP02 in 2:37, MAP18 in 11:20 and improved Vile's MAP14 to 4:00 (which was later beaten by Vile's 3:42).
  • Erwin Lin did a speedrun of MAP17 in 4:28.

    Cooperative demos:

  • More older recordings surfaced, gonna group them by player pairs. First, 2-player coops by Henning Skogsto and Vincent Catalaa. They did a handful of NM/NM100S recordings: MAP02 in 0:37, MAP03 in 0:25, MAP04 in 0:51, MAP05 in 0:35, MAP06 in 1:04, MAP11 in 1:16, MAP13 in 1:55, MAP14 in 0:56, MAP15 in 4:05, MAP16 in 0:48, MAP17 in 2:58, MAP19 in 1:12, MAP20 in 0:54, MAP21 in 1:02, MAP23 in 1:19, MAP24 in 0:48 (NM), MAP24 in 2:32 (NM100S) and MAP26 in 1:21. They also did a Tyson of MAP09 together in 17:59.
  • Vincent Catalaa and Selim "Bastard" Benabdelkhalek did a few runs together. First, they did a full set of Ultimate DOOM NM runs: Ep1 in 8:25, Ep2 in 7:16, Ep3 in 5:27 and Ep4 in 8:57. Other runs: E1M1 Speed in 0:09, E1M4 Speed in 0:13, E1M7 Speed in 1:16, E3M3 Speed in 0:25, E4M2 Max in 1:29, MAP22 Max in 1:17 and MAP21 Speed in 0:16.
  • Laura "BahdKo" Herrmann and Laszlo Vecsei did a speedrun of MAP02 in 0:37.
  • Arno Slagboom and Bjorn Hamels did a few runs for Memento Mori 2: MAP01 Max in 0:57, MAP02 Max in 1:12 and Speed in 0:45.
  • 3-player coops: Arno Slagboom, Vincent Catalaa and Selim "Bastard" Benabdelkhalek recorded E1M1 Max in 0:16, E1M2 Max in 0:57 and E1M3 Max in 1:30. Vincent Catalaa, Selim "Bastard" Benabdelkhalek and Henning Skogsto did a speedrun for MAP14 in 0:18 (substituting the RJ with a shotgun boost), while the first two teamed up with Anders Johnsen for a Plutonia MAP32 Max of 7:58.
  • 4-player coops: Vincent Catalaa, Selim "Bastard" Benabdelkhalek, Arno Slagboom and Bjorn Hamels did MAP30 UV in 0:28 and NM in the same time.
  • Last but not least, Laura "BahdKo" Herrmann, Laszlo Vecsei, Chris Laverdure and Scratchy did the 4-player E4M7 speedrun in the fastest possible time of 1 second, recording the shortest ever demo of COMPET-N.

Full zip of today is available here.

  • And the nominees are... :: (3rd March, 2002)
The nomination is over, if you want to know who the nominees are, or even want to vote for the winners, *gasp*, click here.

Secondly. After a year and a half, COMPET-N moves to a new FTP. Arno Slagboom, who has been our very generous host since July 2000, is moving out to a new house and can't provide hosting for us any longer. I take the opportunity to thank him for the service and wish him all the best.
Luckily for us, Laura "BahdKo" Herrmann offered space and service for COMPET-N. Throughout the past few weeks and with her help, I was working hard to make the change seamless.
The new archive is located at ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/pub/compet-n/ (that is port 8002, for the slow people). Incoming is located at ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/incoming/compet-n/. You can also use the old alias of competn.ath.cx:8002 as it points to the new site now (just don't forget that it's port 8002 from now on).
All rules from the old FTP still apply. Note that this is a T1 line machine, so uploads and downloads should be faster.
There might be a mirror in Europe later on but that is uncertain at the moment.
The people from #nightmare will experience the @incoming commands fail to work, that should resume after the bots' placement is solved.
DANG and SDA are being moved to the same computer and should be back up very soon.

    New demos:

    Ultimate DOOM:

  • Anders Johnsen did an excellent NM Speed of E1M3 in just 0:58. First time anyone has ever hit the normal exit under 1 minute.
  • Quality NM100S work by Radek Pecka: E2M5 in 2:08, E2M6 in 1:54 and E2M7 in 2:27.
  • Tyson goodness: Xit Vono recorded maps from Episode 2: E2M4 in 4:43, E2M5 in 7:03 and E2M6 in 6:22. While Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore improved E2M4 to 4:18, Radek Pecka improved E2M5 to 6:48 and E2M6 to 5:48. Xit Vono responded with 6:27, but Radek improved it again to 5:43, as well as E2M4 to 4:07.
  • Xit Vono decided to have a break from punching, and did two quick built runs instead: E4M7 in 0:09 and E4M9 in 0:08.

    DOOM2:

  • Marijo "Sedlo" Sedlic improved his own MAP15 secret exit speedrun by 1 second and got 0:30. He also did MAP30 -respawn in 0:30.
  • Radek Pecka did various runs: MAP09 UV Max of 5:04 (a healthy 30 sec improvement), MAP31 UV -fast in 2:37 and the same map -respawn in 2:22.

    Plutonia:

  • Adam Williamson did a few quality Pacifist demos: MAP05 in 0:45, MAP13 in 0:44 (with a quite remarkable text file), MAP20 in 0:43 (being UV Speed record as well) and MAP24 in 0:51.

    TNT:

  • After executing Plutonia, Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore finished up TNT UV Movies by running the whole WAD in 55:34. Highly recommended.
  • He also did a NM100S of MAP28 in 1:33.
  • Xit Vono did two Tysons: MAP03 in 9:45 and MAP24 in 7:58.

    Hell Revealed:

  • Casey Alvis recorded a -respawn demo for MAP04 in 2:18.

    Requiem:

  • Speedrunning madness on MAP25: Jason Dyer recorded it in 1:52, which was improved by newcomer Erik Alm's 0:56. Jason struck back by sending in 0:55, but Erik held on to the record with his latest run, 0:51. Somewhat later, he improved it further to 0:43 (Pacifist, too).
  • Jason also sent in a speedrun for MAP06, with the time of 4:28.
  • Goodness for MAP01: Radek Pecka recorded a Tyson of 0:45 and a -respawn of 0:40, while I recorded a Max of 0:38.

    Memento Mori:

  • Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore continues conquering megawads at an alarming rate, this time he did two movies here, levels 01-10 in 20:13 and 11-20 in 26:24.
  • While practicing the last episode, he discovered a new trick for MAP25, which he recorded in 0:28. Great use of monster cooperation here! ;) I improved his time to 0:23.
  • He also did MAP24 in 0:22, which I improved by 1 second and got 0:21.
  • Marijo "Sedlo" Sedlic used his devilish running skills to get 0:19 on MAP29.
  • Anthony Soto set himself a quest: improve the Max records of Memento Mori. In his first batch, he improved the following: MAP04 to 6:44, MAP07 to 7:56, MAP08 to 3:00, MAP15 to 9:49, MAP25 to 6:05 and MAP27 to 7:59. He also got the optimum time on MAP16, which is apparently 9:12.
  • Chris "Ryback" Ratcliff helped Anthony's quest by sending in a demo of MAP10 in 5:24, while Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore sent in a 17:42 demo for MAP28, otherwise known as "City Switchy".
  • Casey Alvis helped the lads with two demos for MAP30, improving his own, a Max in 4:50 and a -fast in 6:18.

    Cooperative demos:

  • Older recordings surfaced, Anders Johnsen teamed up with Selim "Bastard" Benabdelkhalek and recorded E1M5 UV speed in 0:53.
  • Radek Pecka, Zvonimir "FX" Buzanic and myself threw together a speedrun of E3M8 in 0:12 and a Max of MAP01 in 0:13. We were joined by Istvan Pataki and did a 4-way coop on MAP07 and got 0:20.
  • More older recordings from last summer, Laszlo Vecsei and Anthony Soto did a nearly complete pack of Max demos for the Classic Episode. They did E2M1 in 1:09, E2M3 in 3:48, E2M4 in 4:22, E2M5 in 2:58, E2M6 in 4:09 and E2M7 in 3:56. They also recorded two demos together with Laura "BahdKo" Herrmann, E2M1 in 0:53 and E2M2 in 1:28.

One new form is up, being from Radek Pecka.
