Zdaemon servers

January 10, 2006

Doom2.net runs a number of zdaemon servers. All servers are on RedHat Linux variant platforms and are colocated in network centers (no cable/DSL stuff). Servers which may be seen around, depending on the status of the various networks and network sites they connect through, are:

Doom2.net Chicago:
upstream network: Verio (AS 174)
bandwidth: much bigger than any zdaemon server can ever use.
traceroute to 131.103.3.6 for network testing

Doom2.net Michigan:
upstream networks: Level3 (AS 3356), Qwest (209)
bandwidth: up to 4Mbps
traceroute to 64.113.33.10 for network testing

Doom2.net Maryland
upstream network: uu.net (AS 701)
Bandwidth: PPP-bonded dual T1 (3Mbps)
traceroute to 65.192.90.195 for network testing (ping nonfunctional)

Doom2.net Washington
upstream network: several hops away from above.net (AS 6461)
Bandwidth: T1 (1.5Mbps)
Traceroute to 64.124.228.15 for network testing (several hops near end of traceroute may time out, this is normal)

Doom2.net Europe and the _TyServer_ series
upstream network: EUnet/Saunalahti (AS 790 or 6667)
Bandwidth: much bigger than any zdaemon server can ever use
traceroute to 212.226.82.61 for network testing

Server daemon totals:

Doom2.net: about 60
_TyServer_: about 24

Doom2.net server policies:

The main server admin for the Doom2.net servers is BahdKo (me) and I hate assholes. If I notice someone behaving like an asshole on my servers, I have been known to block their IP address or netblock, usually without telling them or explaining why. Server "bans" of this type are independent of actual Zdaemon bans, and Raider, Lyfe, and the Zdaemon crew have no control over them so don't bother them about it. I am not on an asshole hunt or anything, but when I hear about it or see it, it pisses me off, so, yeah.

Complaints about assholes should be emailed to bahdko@doom2.net before midnight on the same day the asshole behavior occurred.

A few examples of asshole behavior would be:
  • Someone deliberately making the server unusable as it is obviously intended to be used. This would include such things as ruining other people's coop games by exclusively fragging other players, or preventing a 1 on 1 server from being usable by joining but not playing (should be hard to do with doom2.net's 1 on 1 server settings though).
  • Tormenting people verbally beyond a reasonable threshold. Some verbal taunting may be expected in this kind of game environment but people who do this kind of stuff are unwelcome:
    • make a habit of expressing viciousness or unsportsmanlike behavior
    • go overboard with taunting, making someone into a victim
  •  No Cheaters Allowed. Long-term Cheaters are a special breed of people who are so shallow that they get a rush out of appearing to win with their peers or on a scoreboard, even though they know that they didn't remotely earn the win. Whereas most of us would feel sick at that prospect, Cheaters don't have the mental capacity to correctly absorb the impact of this discrepancy. Cheaters are an insult to themselves, the people they play, and to the game. They don't belong in any competitive environment and should instead spend all of their waking hours sweeping floors or shoveling horse feces:

In general, act like a Doom player and not a 13 year old AOL kiddie who finally got some unsupervised time on Mommy's PC and you'll be fine.

Typone is admin for the _TyServer_ series.

When Carnevil gets me a *nix binary on the latest Skulltag version, I intend to run Skulltag servers too. Skulltag actually has a decent "oldschool" mode, although it hasn't been as extensively playtested as Zdaemon's oldschool mode due to the limited exposure/availability caused by its windows-only platform restriction.
