The Old Stuff Chronicles - Linguica - Saturday Dec 30 05:44:55 2000

Today in the second edition of The Old Stuff Chronicles (last week was omitted from the schedule since we felt that -- bah, I forgot to post one), we look at another classic Doom 1 WAD from 1994, Galaxia by Pavel Hodek. If you've never heard of this WAD, it was one of the first levels ever to have a quasi-requisite storyline - the ZIP comes with a text file outlining the events leading up to the beginning of the level, where you will find yourself against some... rather uneven odds. From the classic opening room the level spills out into rail stations, sewers, warehouses, and many more environments. One of the most memorable parts of the level comes in the form of a hallway with some rather odd wall decorations which ought to be seen for yourself. While this WAD again is pretty wide-open and plain by today's standards, it is noteworthy for its use of theme and storyline to produce a coherent experience; one of the first Doom WADs to do so. Galaxia can be downloaded here.

This level really rocks. I still play it from time to time, but never did finish it. Did anyone else get that weird thing where you had 0% health, but could still move without the monsters seeing you?

"smmu texture conversion" posted Saturday Dec 30 13:33:59 2000

SMMU has code to let you run doom 1 levels under doom2 by translating the doom1-only textures into the nearest doom2-equivalent. Basically like the edmap texture conversion feature, but in realtime

I think Fraggle has to explain briefly how he ran that WAD on DOOM 2 in SMMU.

When I'm finished, you will be able to kick ling's sorry little butt!!

That's why I said Doom 1 _only_ textures, e.g. PLANET1

There were textures that both DOOM and DOOM 2 use, like for example, SLADWALL is in both DOOM and DOOM 2.

But what about the Doom 1 only textures then?

My post still stands :)

Fraggle ran the map perfectly on DOOM 2 with SMMU is because loading a DOOM Map on SMMU running DOOM 2 is like loading a custom-made Quake Level.

I think it converts the ExMx of the map(s) to MAPxx, and changes all the Doom 1 textures a map uses into their nearest Doom 2 equivalents.

This level was (is) one of the most fun you can play.

Back in grade school I used to be disappointed with "only an A" on tests. (You know, with extra credit and stuff)

Hey, it's about time, I was really looking forward to this last week, and was extremely disappointed when there was none (hey, how come you never here anyone say, "I was appointed when I found out that I made an A on the test," when people say, "I was disappointed when I found out that I made an F on the test?"). I think to make up for it, you should give us another one this week. Of course, I'm probably all alone in my love of the old stuff chronicles, so I'll just be quiet now.

First post.

I've played this one before aswell.

Me and my friend found it on this doom cd called doomsday or something- It was one of the few maps on it that we enjoyed.
