The Old Stuff Chronicles

Linguica - Saturday Mar 24 18:01:02 2001
Man, it's been a while since we've had one of these... in case you've forgotten, TOSC is a supposedly-weekly feature highlighting one old-and-maybe-forgotten Doom / Doom 2 level which is worth taking a second look at. This month's week's level review comes to us courtesy of Matt Dixon. Enjoy:
Mountain of Fire, a relatively unknown but influential
classic, was released by Italian author Alberto Barsella in May of 1994. A
sequel to the previously released Dead Base, Mountain of
Fire was the second and final part of a never completed set of DOOM levels
known as 'Wasteland'. Both Dead Base and Moutain of Fire are, for the time
they were released, amazing. Mountain of Fire has a timeless beauty to its
simplicity, transporting the player to the inmost caverns of a volcano. I
consider Mountain of Fire an unheralded classic, boasting features like a
waterfall with ambient noise, cave-ins, and a computer message...all dating
back to the earliest years of DOOM's user-end development: 1994. Download
Mountain of Fire and judge for yourself...and watch your
step.

Yeah, you DO have to no-clip out of some areas.
By the way, just like to point out what a great job the frenchmen did displaying an underground UAC base ruptured throughout by an earthquake. That was sweet, having to jump across chasms of fire.

I was think about those maps about a week ago or so. Thank god somebody found them!
Too bad I can't play them again on account of a dead HD and Motherboard! AARRGGHH!!!
If remember correctly the the keys in the volcano were quite a pain to find.
And Lut, it was a D!Zone Gold for Doom/Doom2
disc. But you knew that already right?

Make sure you play the first map in this supposed "series", Deadbase, it's a great map too.
There's several versions of both maps though, so make sure you have the most recent ones (recent being a rather relative term in this case :) )

Oh man I remember this map. I played it once on one of the D!Zone CDs, loved it, and forgot the filename. I couldn't find it for a few months until I finally played all the wads on there till I could find it.

In that room with all the caco's spawning in to get out you gotta hit that switch hidden behind one of the faces that will open 2 doors, one is a door disguised as another face stone, theother is the door you came in from, if you hit the switch behind the second hidden door you lower the key platform givin' you access to the cage.

I looked in the editor and couldn't find any way to exit that room. You hit a switch in the cage though that opens a door. It might have been that it was supposed to open the red keyed door aswell so you could leave. but I can't see how anyone could forget to fix such a obvious bug.

I don't think Cocoon has ever been impressed by a wad created before 1996. I think he is applying modern standards to older wads.
Just an observation.

Cocoon: shoot the wall on the side of that "hole" that the red key is in and a path will open. (Another secret)
I couldn't get out for the room where the cacodemons spawned though. (where the blu key was at ... wich you by the way had to open a secret to reach)
Lots of neccesary secrets in this map.
Where was that radio message?

I haven't played it all the way through yet, but I wasn't that amazed by what I've seen so far...

This really is a superb "old timer" level.
Really enjoyed playing it. Very inovative. First "old stuff" level I hadn't played B4.
Needing to find secrets to complete a level annoys me, but I could forgive it on this level as it was a lot of fun.

The level is definitely very interesting! Back in 94 I would have obeyed it. :)
It is possible to finish it without clipwalking, but the yellow key is too hard to find.
Ack.

That's sad, the guy should have kept making the levels.
*I must note that a lot of this level doesn't... work. I had to no-clip around a few times when it was absolutely necessary to nab keys and get to further areas that were accessible no other way. I find this in a lot of people's big maps these days, and I encourage the assholes to not make levels where there are loose ends and either switches are so damn hidden or there are none that we have to cheat to finish the level because there is a wall in the way.*
